LCD Backlighting – Too much wasted energy
Today’s LCD displays (TV’s or Monitors) are already power saving with most rated with Energy Star abilities. They are however still quite capable of eating a lot of power due to the back light which is most often an extremely thin and flat fluorescent tube that needs quite a lot of power to initiate the charge. That is why it is vital you unplug the unit or get a power strip with individual power switches to turn-off these gadgets when not in use.
Called Vampire power, it is the standby power consumption that goes on right under our very noses without us even knowing about it. LCD displays need a lot of power for the standby mode of monitors and TV’s so they can be turned on at the flick of a switch. They may need some time to warm up before they turn on but saving that small amount of power would account to a couple of hundred bucks a year, considering each and every home has several gadgets that are plugged in at all times.
